Congratulations to bottom age player’s Ryan Gardner and Lachlan Potter who have been selected in the annual U17 All Stars Match, however an amendment to the program now has the game playing at 10am this Saturday the 29th, at the MCG before the 2018 AFL Grand Final.
50 of the best junior footballers in the country will be on display in the AFL’s showcase of the country’s top young talent on Grand Final day.
Having the opportunity to play on the hallow MCG turf will be exciting for both the boys, who have impressed many with their seasons for the Northern Knights.
Gardner was rewarded earlier this year making his Vic Metro debut as a bottom ager and now this opportunity to play in front of eager footy fans on Grand Final day is “really exciting.”
“it’s going to be a pretty special feeling running out on the MCG on Grand Final day, it’s something you dream of as a kid.” He said.
“I can’t wait to meet all the kids I’ll be playing alongside and to compete against some of the best footballers in Australia at our age level is going to be a great challenge and one I’m really grateful for.”
Meanwhile fellow teammate and half back-flanker Lachlan Potter is also soaking it all up after he found out he would be running up the race onto the MCG this Saturday morning.
“It still doesn’t feel real after opening the email and finding out it’s the curtain raiser to the AFL Grand Final. It’s still hard to believe it.” He said
“It’s just about every little kid’s dream to play on the MCG and it’s certainly been mine, so to be able to achieve it, I’m stoked and it’s a privilege to be chosen.”
What would be the cherry on the top for the speedster, is the fact that his beloved Collingwood Football Club will take the field at the final siren of his match.
“To top it off I get to watch Collingwood hopefully win the flag!” He said.
Northern Knights Talent Manager, Rhy Gieschen, had nothing but praise for the two boys and says that it’s “great recognition” for their quality seasons.
“They’ve had really quality seasons for bottom age boys and both have some real exciting traits.” He said.
“They’ve worked exceptionally hard from day one of pre-season have committed themselves fully to improving their strength, fitness and all aspects of their football.”
“They both love the game and dream of playing AFL Football and selection in this game shows they are on track if they keep working hard. I know everyone at the Knights will be cheering them on.”
We at the Northern Knights wish the boys all the best, and look forward in seeing how they go. For all those interested, the game will be streamed live at afl.com.au.
