The Northern Knights have gone down by 25 points to the Sandringham Dragons in their Round 2 clash on Sunday afternoon.

After hitting the front just before three quarter time, the Knights ran out of legs as the Dragons kicked five goals to one in the final term to snatch their second win of the season.

Knights’ Coach Justin Wenke said the boys’ effort was exceptional but had to still accept the fact they didn’t take the opportunity that was presented.

The Knights struggled in the first half but chipped away and found themselves down by just 19 points heading into half time.

“We had a slow start and looked a little bit flustered in that first quarter and to Sandringham’s credit they put us under a lot of pressure and kept the ball away from us.” Wenke said.

“The back half of the second quarter we started to play our brand of football and after Naishy (Patrick Naish) kicked that goal on the siren, the scoreboard flattered us a bit but we felt we were right back in the game.”

After a poor first half, the Knights third term was outstanding, keeping the Dragons goalless while kicking three of their own to take the lead into the last quarter.

“The third quarter was a terrific sign of what we can do as a team. We were able to hold one of the best teams in the competition goalless and kicked 3.4 ourselves and if we had’ve kicked straight it may have been a different story heading into the last term.”

Max Dreher was once again outstanding in defence and also when moved into the midfield in the second half. Mark Baker was strong in defence when put under serious pressure by the tall Dragons forward line.

“Some of Max Dreher’s GPS results in the third quarter were incredible. His will to run and hunt the ball in that term helped us take the lead. Big Bakes did really well on one of the most imposing big men in the competition and to see that in just his second game was great.”

“Jack Petrucelle’s third quarter and game in general was terrific to see, it was good to see him play with some confidence and really show what he is capable of, I thought Marcus (Lentini) and Tom (McKenzie) in that first half really stood up when we were under the pump and that’s a credit to them.”

The Knights head back home next week where they take on the Eastern Ranges, who lost to the Oakleigh Chargers last weekend at Preston City Oval on Sunday at 11:30am
