The Northern Knights home and away season has come to an end with a 45-point loss to the Sandringham Dragons on Saturday afternoon at MARS Stadium.
The Dragons used a nine goal to three second half to run away with a comfortable victory.
With wind playing a big part in the early stages of the game, the first half was a close, scrappy affair with both teams failing to capitalise on the wind.
The Dragons kicked the first three goals of the game before Joel Naylor and Sunny Brazier kicked goals to bring the Knights within 13 points at the first change.
In the second quarter the Knights played a really exciting brand of football to get themselves back into the game. Goals to Jack Petruccelle, Ethan Penrith and Kye Yodgee gave the Knights the lead before a late goal to the Dragons had them leading by one point at the main change.
After a competitive first half, the second was a completely different story. The Dragons slammed on 4.9 to nothing in the third term to pull away and blow the margin out to 34 points at three quarter time.
Coach Justin Wenke said it was a disappointing day.
“We were beaten in all of the key areas and the second half showed that, Wenke said.”
“The third term was really disappointing, for them to have thirteen shots on goal to our none was poor and we gave them heaps of easy goals.”
The last term was more of the same with the Dragons kicking five goals straight to 3.1 for the Knights in a disappointing end to the home and away season.
“In that last term we failed to take advantage of the wind like they did and ended up being outscored thanks to some poor play and wasted chances and that hurt us.”
The Knights move on to play the Oakleigh Chargers in an elimination final this Saturday and Victoria Park in what will be a massive test to see how far they have come this year.
“It’s going to be a great test for us and the teams will be much different from last time so that will change a lot.”
“It’s a new season now, so everyone is at level pegging and we give ourselves a good chance to get the win.”
