The Northern Knights have used a six goal to three second half to run away 15 point winners against the Bendigo Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at Preston City Oval.
A three goal to none third term for the Knights helped set up their sixth win of the season and help consolidate their place in the top eight.
A goal to Sam Binion to start the last quarter helped the Knights take a game high 22-point lead five minutes into the term. The Pioneers threw everything at the Knights with three quick last quarter goals to get the margin back to 4 points before two late goals to Binion and Patrik Della Rocca got the Knights home.
Coach Justin Wenke says he’s really happy that the boys responded in that last term.
“It was pleasing to finish off the win and respond to being challenged and having our backs against the wall,” Wenke said,
“The game was really scrappy and untidy throughout the game especially in that first half. The second half we were a bit better going forward and were able to capitalise a bit more on the scoreboard.”
The highlight of the day was Christian Farchione’s outstanding goal from the boundary line in the third quarter where the Knights started to pull away.
Max Dreher was excellent on return from Vic Metro duties as well as ruckmen Matt Harman. While Kye Yodgee again was terrific when he moved into the midfield.
“Max was asked to play on a really good player and we thought he broke even in that contest thanks to his gut running throughout the whole game.”
“Matt rucked solidly all day, Kye was really influential in the midfield while Ryan Bowkett and Braedyn Gillard played really good team orientated roles.”
The Knights now sit sixth on the ladder and take on the fifth place Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday afternoon in Dandenong. Coach Wenke says it’s going to be a big challenge for the boys.
With the three ‘Future’s Rounds’ now over the Knights will welcome back all of their Metro players and could make up to ten changes to the side as will Dandenong which makes for a very exciting clash to come on Saturday.
“We haven’t beaten a top team yet and Saturday is a great chance to do so, hopefully the boys are up to it and we can make a statement.”
