The Northern Knights 2017 season has come to a disappointing close, falling to the top of the table Oakleigh Chargers by 70 points on Saturday afternoon in their elimination final.

The Chargers lead from start to finish kicking the first two goals of the game before a goal to Ethan Penrith helped settle the Knights a little but it was all Oakleigh for the rest of the term kicking the last three goals to lead by 23 points at the first change.

The second term was much better from the Knights with goals to Jack Petruccelle and Patrick Naish helping give them a little bit of a spark before a goal to Chargers on the half time siren gave them a 30-point lead.

In the second half it was all Oakleigh, the third quarter the Chargers broke the back of the Knights kicking five goals to none to blow the margin out to 60 points at three quarter time.

The last quarter was a bit like a training drill with the ball going end to end with Oakleigh kicking two goals before a goal to Braedyn Gillard finished the game.

Coach Justin Wenke said it was a sad way to end the season.

“I’m gutted, not just for me but the boys too,” Wenke said.

“It was a really disappointing day and it showed how far we still have to come before we can be contenders each year.”

While disappointing on the day, the season can still be seen as a real step forward for the club.

“We set a goal to play finals this year and we did that, so that is something we should be proud of. This should be the standard from now on and we need to keep improving.”

Wenke said that the boys still should feel disappointed about the result today and use it as a driving force for next year.

“We can’t settle for just making finals, these bottom ages boys need to use this to motivate them in the pre-season and make us came back bigger and better next year.”
