The Northern Knights revealed their 2018 Guernsey numbers on Monday night, with Braedyn Gillard headlining the night after being awarded the captaincy for the season.
Gillard will be joined by a large leadership group this season, including a mix of Top Age Players, 19-Year-Olds and Bottom Agers. Tom McKenzie, Brody Bell, Joel Naylor, Mark Baker, Ryan Sturgess and Ryan Gardner were the boys selected by the staff and playing group in a leadership ballot just over a week before.
Building on the foundation that former Northern Knights Captain and current St Kilda Defender Nick Coffield set last season, Gillard began his acceptance speech by listing the values the club stands by.
“Brotherhood, Purpose, Belief and Persistence. The four key values we decided on as a team.” Gillard said.
“These are the values that I believe will allow us to grow as a club and take another stride in the positive direction that we started last year.”
It was made clear to the playing group, staff and parents that this year was about continuing to grow a culture.
A culture that aligns with the boy’s beliefs, and a culture that make people want to be a part of it. One that will make everyone proud to be #UKNIGHTED.
“I feel these values are crucial to our success and development this year.” He said.
“We’ve made some big steps in building the culture that we want to build. It started off with our camp earlier this year.”
“The sharing of personal stories which was an amazing experience for our club that brought us all together as a team, and helped build the brotherhood that is so important to the culture we are trying to develop.”
Additionally, 48 players were presented with their jumpers last night by someone that had influenced their football career in some manner.
Mothers, Fathers, siblings, relatives, coaches and friends were just some of the people that presented jumpers throughout the evening.
The club now looks forward to this Saturday’s Round 1 clash against the Sandringham Dragons at Frankston Oval.
